Rickus van Niekerk

Rickus is an operational leader with nearly a decade of experience across public transport, with deep expertise in rail operations and performance management.

He currently works as a Service Performance Leader at Auckland One Rail and has held a range of operational leadership roles across both bus and rail environments. His experience includes working in control room settings, most recently within the joint Auckland Rail Operations Centre, co-located with KiwiRail and Auckland Transport. This has given him first-hand exposure to complex, multi-agency operating environments and the realities of managing live operations under pressure.

Rickus specialises in digital transformation, continuous improvement, and team leadership. He has led and contributed to large-scale improvement initiatives within the rail sector, supporting the evolution of Auckland’s operations centre from a small, fragmented team into a more capable, structured, and resilient function.

His approach is practical and collaborative, with a strong focus on improving how teams use information, systems, and processes to support better decision-making and more consistent operational outcomes.
